Graphics file types
For those who want to understand a little more, please read below.
Each printing job requires specific file types to ensure that a suitable quality result is achieved.
The two main types
Raster graphics (JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF etc…), and
Vector graphics (EPS, AI, SVG etc…)
Main features of each type:
Raster graphics are resolution dependent.
A raster graphics image (or bitmap) is basically a rectangular grid of pixels, or points of color. Generally the file size tells you if the image has a low or high resolution. This, in turn, determines at what size the image can be printed for a good quality result. If you print a large image using a small raster image file, you will see the individual pixels (pixellation) and the result will be poor.
Raster graphics are better for pictures and photo-realistic images.
Vector graphics are resolution independent.
A vector image is based on mathematical equations to represent shapes (lines, curves, points etc). Usually used for graphic design (logos etc) and for typesetting (words only) these types of images can be printed at any size without loss of quality.
Which file type do I need to send?
Check with us first before sending if you are unsure.
To print photographs and photo-realistic images:
JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF
Resolutions of 300dpi (dots per inch) produce the best printed results.
To print logos and/or words only (signs):
EPS, AI, SVG
These can be supplied as is: we can blow them up to any size without loss of resolution.
